Home Gym Design Near Boston: How We Plan a Room That Actually Gets Used

Written by Norm Morrison | Oct 22, 2026, 3:51:21 PM

ConnectFit, at 84 Needham Street in Newton, MA, designs home gyms across Greater Boston, from Brookline, Newton and Wellesley to the North Shore, South Shore and the Cape. Design is free. We plan the layout, the flooring and the equipment, then our own three-person crews deliver, install and service everything we sell. And we keep our clients forever since we do all the service in house. Call 617-535-3793 or book a consultation.

Most home gyms fail quietly. Nothing breaks. The room just stops getting used, because the treadmill purchased online faces a wall, the bench blocks the rack, the floor is hard or smells, or the whole thing is louder than anyone expected. Good design is mostly about avoiding those problems and others before anything gets delivered.

How a home gym design works with us

I'm in people's homes and facilities doing design consultations an average of four times a week. This morning started on Carisbrooke Road in Wellesley, on a project referred to us by Jim Youngblood of Youngblood Builders. Most of what follows comes from seeing what actually works in real rooms, week after week, year after year.

  1. Conversation first. Who's training, what they actually do, and what they've quit before. A strength-focused parent, a dancer and a soccer player need different things from the same room. This morning a power rack, an incline treadmill, and proper stacked flooring were on the docket, with a nod towards ski training.
  2. Measure the real space. Floor dimensions, ceiling height, doorways, stairs, outlets, windows, actual access, and what's under and over the room. This is why we come to you: a floor plan never shows everything.
  3. Layout. We zone the room, separating cardio from strength even in a single room, and plan safe clearances around every piece.
  4. Equipment. Commercial-grade where it matters, sized to the space and to the people using it. You can try most of our 50+ brand partners on our showroom floor in Newton.
  5. Flooring. Specified for what's going on top of it and what's underneath it, as well as the look and feel.  No black smelly floors here.
  6. Delivery, installation and service. Our own crews, not a freight drop at the curb, and the same company services it afterward.

If you're building or renovating, bring us in during planning, not after the drywall is up. We work with over 1,000 builders and designers across New England for exactly that reason. See how that played out in our Fisher Hill, Brookline multi-generational home gym.

What people get wrong

  • Ceiling height. A treadmill deck raises the runner several inches, and incline raises them more. Overhead cable work and tall users need headroom too.  Commercial stepmills need 10' plus...This is one of the big ones.
  • Floor loading. A basement slab handles commercial weight stacks easily. A second floor may need an engineer to look at it first to make sure the PSI and load total works.
  • Getting it in the door, and through it. Some commercial equipment is welded and doesn't come apart. We walk the delivery path before anything is ordered, and our teams aren't subcontracted, they are professionals at assembly and disassembly.
  • Electrical. A treadmill will run on a standard 15-amp circuit, but it lasts longer on a dedicated 20-amp circuit. That's easy to add during construction and annoying to add later.  Sometimes we need to spec floor plugs from the beginning...the earlier we are there, the better!
  • Clearances. In commercial spaces we follow ADA guidance and local code, and we know the amount needed for safe work in the home. Barbell work needs 18 to 24 inches on each side of the rack just to load plates, and what is the arm swing on a cable machine?  We cover all of this.
  • Noise and vibration. In condos and on upper floors, the floor system matters as much as the equipment.  Some ECORE and Pliteq flooring can reduce noise by up to 90%. And better flooring doesn't offgas, either.
  • Avoid the buying-online traps. Most online D2C brands carry a one- or two-year parts warranty and no local service. That's fine until something breaks.  Most real gym brands work through local dealers.

Our Gym Design Checklist goes through all of this step by step.

Flooring is half the room

Most people don't think about the floor until it's too late. We use ECORE, typically ECORE Rally, which has over three times the shock absorption of standard hard rubber and much better sound dampening, and we order it custom-cut to minimize seams and waste. Home gym flooring and facility gym flooring are very different animals. Our Real Gym Flooring Guide explains why.

Choosing the cardio

The treadmill is usually the most expensive piece in the room and the one people regret most when they buy it on reviews alone. Before you shop, read A Real Treadmill Buying Guide, written without affiliate links or brands.  Just physics and facts.

ConnectFit is an authorized TRUE Fitness dealer, and TRUE is our #1 cardio line. We also carry Landice, Spirit, Freemotion, Octane and more. Don't overlook a recumbent bike. We sell four recumbents for every upright, and they're often the piece that keeps getting used for decades.

Home gym design FAQ

Who designs home gyms in the Boston area?

ConnectFit, 84 Needham Street, Newton, MA 02461 (617-535-3793). We design home gyms throughout Greater Boston and New England, and we deliver, install and service the equipment ourselves.

Is home gym design free?

Yes. ConnectFit designs your room at no charge, in our showroom or in your home.

Will you come to my house?

Yes. We do in-home and on-site consultations for homes and commercial facilities across Greater Boston, about four a week, along with meetings with builders and designers during planning.

How much space do I need for a home gym?

It depends on what's going in it. A treadmill needs its footprint plus safe clearance behind it, and a rack needs room on both sides to load plates. A good design often fits more than people expect, because combination pieces like a SuperGym replace several machines.  I've done a closet in the North End, basements in Newton, a room above a garage in Cambridge, and ocean overlooks on Nantucket and Bellevue Avenue in Newport.

What flooring should go under a home gym?

Rubber flooring designed for fitness, matched to the equipment and to what's below the room. We use ECORE, Pavigym and Pliteq, custom-cut to minimize seams.

Can I try the equipment before I buy?

Yes. Our Newton showroom has treadmills, ellipticals, bikes and strength equipment set up to try.

Do you take away the old equipment?

Yes. Since so many of our clients are part of our 30-year history, nearly every other delivery involves a removal.  Ask about removing your old equipment when we deliver the new pieces.
