Why Cybex Matters...

In the world of Fitness Equipment, I've carried dozens of brands as a dealer, and worked for a few manufacturers on the other side.  I've also helped a number of brands design equipment.  

One of those brands was Cybex.

Cybex matters because they actually went beyond building cookie-cutter equipment, to trying to find a better biomechanic.  Sort of what you'd hope all companies would do, instead of marketing better or trying to sell cheaper, Cybex had a golden age where they went high-end and made equipment that did the job better, which made them the "Must-Have" in every High-end training Gym and every professional sports team weight room.  When everyone else was building copycat elliptical machines, they created the Arc trainer.  When everyone else was copying the Freemotion functional trainer, they developed the Bravo.

At the heart of this was the Cybex Institute in Medway, not merely a marketing piece, an actual research center where they tested equipment and improved it.  I remember them finding a counter-intuitive increase in abdominal muscle activation through a change in foot position, just as one example. 

And frankly, the industry moves slowly enough that many of those designs are still Best-in-class, for biomechanics and efficiency. And if you want to know why, please come on in and ask!  It is pretty easy to show, for example the research where the arc trainer is easier on your joints than a circular elliptical and has better hamstring and glute activation.
